A True Guide Explorateur Love Story

Denis and Isabelle, if you’re reading this, thank you for trusting us with such a precious moment.

This isn’t a story made up for a brochure.

It really happened.

It’s one of those experiences that stays with us long after our travellers return home.

It Began with a Question

Denis contacted us to talk about his trip to India.

As we got to know him and learn what had inspired his journey, we began by asking about his plans.

At one point, we asked him:

“Will this be your honeymoon?”

His answer made us smile.

He said, in effect:

“If all goes well, perhaps my next trip with you will be our honeymoon.”

There was clearly more to the story.

So we asked a few more personal questions.

Denis trusted us.

He told us that he and Isabelle had been together for five years.

And that he wanted to ask her to marry him.

Denis already had an idea for his proposal.

He wanted to propose in front of the Taj Mahal.

The Taj Mahal Wasn’t Our Choice

And who could blame him?

The Taj Mahal is one of India’s most iconic landmarks, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.

It’s extraordinary. It’s romantic.

It’s a place everyone should see at least once.

But we had another idea for his proposal.

We said to Denis:

“The Taj Mahal is perfect to visit, but perhaps not for the moment you have in mind.” Why?

Because a marriage proposal deserves something different.

The Taj Mahal is one of India’s busiest visitor sites. You’re surrounded by visitors, groups, guides and constant movement.

We wanted somewhere more private. A place where Denis and Isabelle could forget the rest of the world. Somewhere peaceful, with nature, candles, stars and a moment that belonged only to them.

We told Denis we had a better idea: somewhere unexpected, peaceful and private.

A place where Isabelle would never expect such a moment. Denis trusted our local knowledge and accepted our suggestion. Now it was our turn to create the perfect setting. We knew just where to look.

With help from our local team and the hotel staff, I found a little terrace. The perfect table. The perfect view. And, as if nature had joined our secret plan, the perfect evening.

It was February 2015. A gentle breeze crossed the terrace. Candlelight warmed the evening, the weather was on our side, and above them a full moon lit a sky full of stars.

That evening, Denis had two moons before him.

One shone in the sky. The other was sitting across from him.

The candlelit dinner began. Denis had brought one very important ingredient with him: a ring.

He had secretly bought it in Agra and entrusted it to us.

Our mission was simple:
Keep it secret.

The Proposal

We carefully hid the ring in Isabelle’s soup and waited. We were probably more nervous than Denis.

One spoonful... Two spoonfuls... Three...

Suddenly, Isabelle stopped. She looked at Denis, then at her soup, and said:
“There’s a bone in my chicken soup!”

Denis stayed perfectly calm and played along.
“Show me, please.”

Isabelle lifted the mysterious object from her soup and looked at it, trying to work out how a chicken bone had ended up in her dinner.

Then she looked up. Denis was no longer sitting across from her. He was kneeling in front of her. The moment had come.

Right on cue, we played a beautiful French song:
“Je t’aimais, je t’aime, je t’aimerai” by Francis Cabrel.

From that moment on, there was nothing more for us to do. The rest belonged to Denis and Isabelle.

There were tears, smiles, emotion and, of course…

There was a “Yes”.

An Evening We’ll Never Forget

That evening became a little legend at the hotel. The story spread through its corridors. The staff knew what had happened, and we couldn’t stop talking about the moment.

We hadn’t simply organised a dinner. We had helped create a lasting memory.

A memory for two people who had already shared five years together and were about to begin a new chapter together.

That’s what we love about planning trips for couples. Sometimes, the itinerary matters less than the moment.

The moment is what matters.

And Their Story Continued…

Two years later, Denis and Isabelle returned to India. This time, something had changed: they were married. They came back to discover South India with us.

It meant a great deal to us. They had trusted us with one of the most important moments in their relationship, then trusted us again with another trip.

It’s more than a booking. It’s a relationship that grows.
